Solar energy – as good as it seems?
Solar energy is an increasingly used renewable energy source that comes from the radiated heat and light from the sun. While it has earned a good reputation due to being “green”, all of its aspects may not be that positive. In this post I will give a brief insight of its pros and cons.
Pros:
- It is easy to install in remote areas where the traditional power lines cannot reach
- After the initial investment, the maintenance costs are almost non-existent
- The systems are durable, approximately 25-30 years
- Flexibility – it can adapt to the needs of the users
Cons:
- The radiation is not constant either during the day and the year, or in different regions
- If used for a great scale, it creates great visual contamination due to the extension of land needed
- The production of photovoltaic panels has an important environmental impact
- It requires a high initial investment
In my opinion it is a good alternative to traditional sources of energy, although it is best adapted to small-scale situations.
