What about Managerial Skills?

-And what about managerial skills? – Peter asked Laura while he was consulting the master’s program he was about to start.

-Managerial skills? The one whose lecturer is Christopher Metcalfe?

-Yeah, that one. What do you think about it?

-Oh, that man is awesome, the same as his subject.

-It can be that good. Just look at the name: managerial skills! Sounds boring!

-I know how it sounds, but you’ll see it’s really interesting.

-But…

-Shhhh! Listen to me. I know we came from a scientific and technological field and you’re not used to these topics. However you’ll notice the subject is really useful and Chris makes it easy for you.

Basically, the subject is divided in three modules: presentations, negotiations and leadership.

The first of all is how to give a presentation. As you understand, present your ideas to your bosses, colleagues or even a great public is very common nowadays. In the course you’ll learn how you can make a presentation successful focusing it in the audience, making them aware of what’s in it for them, selling the idea and convincing them to do actions you want them to do. To perform it you need to prepare it measuring the audience, following simple principles to give the display and supporting you with nice and useful visual aids.

The second one is how to do an effective negotiation. In the current world negotiation is a process
that constantly occurs in everyday life (in business, legal proceedings, even in personal situations). Here in class you’ll gain information about what’s the objective in it, negotiation techniques, phases in a negotiation and how to deal with each of them.

And the last part is about leadership. How to be a good leader, which is not the same as being a manager or a boss. Chris will speak about the abilities a leader possess, how to motivate your team and manage your time, the importance of responsibility and a lot of theories you’ll find surely helpful in the future.

And now, what is your opinion of managerial skills?

-Mmmmh…doesn’t sound bad. Maybe it’s not that dry and flat…

-I explain you it’s not and you’ll see, I promise. When you’ll finished the course you’ll come and tell me: God, Chris is great!!!

:) Thank you Chris! You’re great!
