The Importance of Saving a Cent
Nowadays it is very important to consider the financial situation of Spain because of the economic crisis we are in. It is a very difficult situation because all of the productive sectors have been affected.
There is a high demand of food products (base products). Moreover, inflation is growing, and this is particularly important in Spain because we import lots of products and raw materials.
The financial markets are taking into account this problems and in particular the hypermarkets because they are all the base products that every single home needs.
As a consequence of the economic and financial crisis the hypermarkets that are more expensive have declined their sells but in contrast, there are supermarkets (such as Mercadona, Alcampo…) which are increasing and growing because of their prices and offers (more competitive than the ones which are more expensive). People is taking into account the prices and less the food brands. Nowadays the main promotion is in “white brands” which are more or less with the same quality but much cheaper.
Especially the Mercadona case is remarkable. ‘The Economist’ highlights the success of the Spanish Supermarket despite the crisis plaguing in Spain, showing that the country’s economic problems seem to have made stronger the company headed by Juan Roig. It is important to recall that Mercadona chain in sales, with an annual turnover of 16.5 million € and a network of 1,310 stores, has enjoyed double-digit growth for over a decade. Although profits fell in 2009, they rose 47% last year, after undertaking forceful cost cutting. Following this information, I attached two diagrams to show Mercadona’s financial situation (for more information the Annual Report has more details) http://www.mercadona.es/corp/ing-html/noticias.html
The Mercadona project continues to move forward…
