What is marketing?

The question at the heading has been the leitmotiv of many debates and discussions since the dawn of Marketing itself. In our Marketing classes we saw different definitions. The traditional ones state Marketing is “advertising”, “buying and selling“, or, in a deeper sense “selling more stuff, to more people, more often, for more money, in order to make more profit” (Sergio Zyman, Coca Cola‘s former VP of Marketing). Nowadays the trends have moved towards the CC DV TP interpretation of Marketing, by Philip Kotler.

Today, when I was leaving the EOI (before 8 p.m., incredible!), I was telling my classmate Javier my “worries” about writing a new post concerning one of the marketing-gurus videos we were supposed to watch. I don’t know exactly how and why, but we both remembered an episode of The Simpsons. In that episode, Homer goes to a medical research center when he knows it’s possible to make some money letting the company experiment on him. I just want you to take a break and enjoy the idea of Marketing the scriptwriters have (I think they go for the traditional ones…). Furthermore, this will allow me to gain some time before I feel the duty to write a new post on Marketing! ;)

Homer goes to the medical center…

Scientist: “First we’ll test this experiment perfume on you…”

Homer: “Ah! It burns!”
Scientist: “Hmm… we’ll call it desert breeze.”

Next experiment…

Scientist 1: “That appetite surpressent is amazing!”
Scientist 2: “Homer, you really have no desire to eat that food?”
Homer: “Food?”

Homer: “I’m BLIND!”

Scientist 1: “Who’s gonna buy a pill that makes you blind?”
Scientist 2: We’ll let marketing worry about that!
