My WIIFM of Management Skills
What awaits us in our future life? A tool can help, the WIIFM (What’s In It For Me)… an incredibly useful weapon for life, that I tried to use as much as I could, but did not know his name.
After the course of MS, really interesting and educational, now it’s time to see what we have learned … not theory, but how we apply it to our lives, our future. We have learned many things … but I mostly have taken one thing clear: Always be positive, for any adversity in any situation, it mostly depends on your will.
It’s true, I will not deceive you, don’t always have the strength or courage or motivation to improve ourselves or even to live … but it is precisely in those moments when we have that show us who we are, and where we can go. All lessons on presentations on leadership, motivation, negotiation … leads me to this point. For sure are useful, but in the end everything depends on us.
Some time ago I read an e-mail of motivation and self esteem, “Everyday you get up in the morning and look in the mirror, do you want to be… happy or unhappy? Everything lies in our decision to be “, that is not entirely true, since there are situations that we literally can’t, but we are not going to be driven by despair and grief, are we? Because, who does not have bad times in life?
Also you can see from another perspective, “If your problem has a solution… Why bother? Go for it, and stop worrying and suffering. And if your problem has no solution (which is only death i think) … Why bother? Face it and enjoy your time in the way you can. This way to explain it is a slightly more “fun”.
So do not be afraid, be aware that life is a gift, and we only have one and you have to make the most, looking for what’s in everything we do and things around us that makes us happy or we can learn from… and be able to reduce our pain and suffering to a minimum. Live in the present, learn from the past and look toward the future.
“It’s important to have faith. Faith in ourselves, faith in others, faith in life, faith in the universe or the divine. But even more important that faith is action. Don’t wait for someone or something move your mountains. Arise, arm yourself with courage and go to move them yourself. “(Ana C Blum)
“You got a dream… You gotta protect it. People can’t do somethin’ themselves, they wanna tell you you can’t do it. If you want something, go get it. Period.” (Christopher Gardner)
Management skills: Tools for future

Maybe, it is because I´m not good at neither maths nor solving problems. Besides, it bores me a lot….bufff….all day in front of a computer!!! I don´t want to be an expert in a field, enclosed into a room. I love human contacts and relationships where you can change things. Something, that you can´t make enclosed in a room.
I know what I expect from my future and how it would develop my career. I don´t want to be the person with more knowledge. I would like to be a more intelligent person ,even though I had less knowledge or resources to do a job. Management skills will help me to get this. At the end, this is the goal of management skills, that is human relationships. All applicable to both professional life as personal life. Without realizing it, we manage with things every day and every moment. Therefore, what we have learnt in class these days is perfectly valid for real life.
I hope, after some years I can remember these three issues as something positive. It would be a sign of success, professionally . I think, they could be the foundations of my dream career. That is something related with international projects manager and treated with suppliers in an international company.
Now, I have three powerful tools to master hard situations. As you taught us, always with a positive point of view. It was a great conclusion, from a positive stand is better to face a life, a job or whatever. Don´t see problems. See experiences which help you in the future. Something that will help you to improve your skills.
Anyway, the best experience that I took out from this course is every advice that my teacher gifted me. Some advice and a lot of encouragement to work hard and be confident in every tasks you have to do. Private discussions through mail which fed my confidence. I hope, I dare to do more things in the future without thinking about what people are thinking about me.

Awareness
“Awareness is the state or ability to perceive, to feel, or to be conscious of events, objects or sensory patterns”.
This is probably the most important concept that I have learnt during the Management Skills lectures. It´s a really broad and general concept, that can be applied not only to the business world, but to all life aspects. Knowing ourselves and knowing the world around us can make a diffence between failure and success when trying to achieve our objectives. It might seem really easy, but it´s not, sometimes can be more difficult than the toughest engineering problem.
But lessons were not theoretical about philosophical concepts, not at all. We have applied everything we were taught to practical cases and examples, from a presentation about Madrid´s public transport to a negotiation in China between El Corte Inglés and it´s scarves supplier. The course was divided into 3 main modules:
-Effective presentations
-Effective negotiations
-Leadership
I personally ignored how really fundamental these 3 social abilities could be in the managerial world, but now that I´m aware of my strenghts and weaknesses, I know which ones do I have to improve and in which ones I´m good at.
I just bought Stephen Covey’s book “The 7 habits of highly effective people”, I´m waiting for it to get delivered, I can´t wait to start reading it.
“Every human has four endowments: self awareness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom, the power to choose, to respond, to change” – Stepehen R. Covey

Habilidades directivas ;D
WIIFM? …IAMOWYOA!
I have to recognize that at first I was somewhat skeptical about how this course was going to be developed. I mean, I knew that it was a very important subject which could teach me a lot, but at the same time, I knew that these are the type of courses you don´t simply learn by having the greatest theory being “thrown” at the board, but by having someone that can really motivate you, make you think and explain with the example.
At this moment I have to say that I had a very nice surprise and my expectations were greatly exceeded. In fact, (and I think a lot of people can agree with me on this) this is one of the courses that I have enjoyed the most at EOI.
I realize that many of the information that was given to us, I already knew it, but the difference was that now I was really motivated to think about it and start developing those abilities.
The importance of taking ownership, of creating value, on incentivizing responsibility; developing the ability to delegate, to avoid excuses, to think solution oriented, to stop asking why and focus on our possibilities, to focus on the real benefit we´re giving to the people hearing us, to give options to the others to get better outcomes, to prioritize our activities, to first become the leaders of our own lives are just some of the greatest thoughts this course has left on me.
If I have to ask myself what made me change the way I felt about this subject, I believe right now that it was due to the fact that it was inspiring to me. I could say that at the same time, this was the most valuable thing I learned. I realized that the most efficient way to expect the greatest outcomes comes from being passionate for what you do, being able to Inspire And Motivate Others With Your Own Actions.
Thanks Chris!

What’s In It For You? There were many interesting topics we have gone through, during this subject “Managerial skills”.
How to choose? I think as a whole that will be useful for my future.
We have learnt (or at least we tried to) how to present. It helped me to begin to lose sense of shame.
Leadership is the point I enjoyed the most. I absolutely agree with the fact that a good leader is the key of the team’s success. It is amazing how the relationships and working environment can affect workers and the way they carry out with their tasks. I hope I will be able to be good at leading my peers whenever I need.
Good leaders make good companies.
Yeah, great subject!

Managerial Skills: re-creating awareness
I have just finished a course on Managerial skills, which studied competences for presentations, negotiations and leadership. The main objective of the course was creating awareness on our flaws and talents, and trying to solve and improve them. This purpose was, in my case, achieved.
Was I aware of these flaws and talents? To be honest, I used to be. I worked for almost 5 years in a multinational metallurgic company. Since most of us were engineers, the company invested many time and resources in courses for these abilities. Course objectives were the same, and they created the necessary awareness. However, as time went by, I lost this consciousness, and ended up making the same mistakes I used to make.
Why did this happen? Basically, the lack of training. As the course name stipulates, these are skills, not knowledge. And skills need to be trained. There is no point in being aware and then not keep on practicing what has been learned. You will finish up in the same place as the first day.
What needs to be done? Well… TRAIN! I am aware that I need to practice. Whether the company I’ll be working for provides me with this kind of courses or not, I need to take them on regular basis (at least, once a year).
Why do I need to train? It simple: to become a better professional. I intend to be a consultant. And if I can´t get the attention and confidence of my customers in the first five minutes, can’t establish good relationships for the long term, or can´t lead effectively a group, I will end giving advice to no one. Even if I work in a company, I need to “sell” what I have been working for. I can’t allow to be concentrated on a task for a month, obtaining very good results, and then not presenting it properly and having a bad reaction from my superiors. It’s a total waste of time.
What’s my conclusion? Train. As simple as that. It is always a productive (and fun) way to invest your time.
“The more I train the more I realize I have more speed in me”. Leroy Burrell, former 100 m sprint world record.
