Open Innovation & Lead User

Nowadays everybody knows the importance of innovation in business, but in the last years is having a trend to move from closed innovation to Open Innovation which people think is better, but what is Open Innovation?

Dr. Henry Chesbrough is a co-founder of the Open Innovation Community and created the theory and coined the term “Open Innovation”. Chesbrough, in his book “Open Innovation: The New Imperative for Creating and Profiting from Technology” (2003) describes how companies have shifted from closed innovation processes towards a more open way of innovating.

Traditionally, new business development processes and the marketing of new products took place this way:

Several factors have made closed innovation become obsolete:

-First of all, the mobility and availability of highly educated people has increased over the years and large amounts of knowledge exist outside the research laboratories of large companies.

-Second, the availability of venture capital has increased significantly recently, which makes it possible for good and promising ideas and technologies to be further developed outside the firm.

-Finally, other companies in the supply chain play an increasingly important role in the innovation process.

As a result, companies have started to look for other ways to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of their innovation processes. This way is Open Innovation which can be described as: combining internal and external ideas as well as internal and external paths to market to advance the development of new technologies.

Companies are starting to become aware of the increasingly importance of Open Innovation. Not all good ideas are developed within the own company, and not all ideas should necessarily be further developed within the own firm’s boundaries. So companies have to move from closed innovation principles to Open Innovation principles:

Regarding this concept of Open Innovation, Prof. Eric von Hippel coined the term “Lead User” which are the ones who use their own innovation applied to some original ideas, they do it for free and they don´t look for the monetary benefit, they look for the solving of an issue. The creativeness and innovativeness of lead users makes them an unusual rich source of new product ideas and concepts for companies striving for innovative offerings. Because of that, combine the concept of Open Innovation and Lead User is key to become a better innovative company.
