Managerial Skills Lessons

Last Monday the last “Managerial Skills” lesson took place. During 4 weeks we have been learning about effective presentations, negotiations, leadership and time management. But even more than learning, we have been practicing, by doing presentations and negotiations and participating at class.

And that is quite new for me. As an engineering student I was used to attending classes in which it was hard to follow the explanations, and sometimes the best option was just copying at class and understanding later at home. And as a Spanish student, I was used to attending classes in which the teacher was the only one speaking, talking to students only to tell them to shut up when they were making noise.

Here was completely different: during an important part of class, we were thinking by ourselves about the current theme and our ideas were written in the blackboard. And these ideas were an important part in the examination. The information was following another flow.

A possible reaction to that change can be: how am I going to learn if I am the one who is writing my ideas on the blackboard? Well, I think that is not true. First of all, there are not only my ideas, but also my classmates ideas. And also the teacher always gave us his point of view and the theory of experts in each part of the subject. But by thinking by ourselves, guided by our mates and by the teacher we interiorize much more the main concepts than only reading them.

At the end of the subject I will keep in mind some aspects of each part that I think I won´t forget in a long time. In “Presentations”, I learned that it is important to pay attention to the audience, in “Negotiation” I learned that we don´t have to compete all the time, and sometimes it is better to yield.

But when we talked about Leadership and organizations with “Problem Frame” and “Solution Frame” I really felt identified, and I recognized some of the problems that I had in the past. And thinking about them and reading some extra information, I could understand better what happened and think what could I do to change it in future.
