Awareness
“Awareness is the state or ability to perceive, to feel, or to be conscious of events, objects or sensory patterns”.
This is probably the most important concept that I have learnt during the Management Skills lectures. It´s a really broad and general concept, that can be applied not only to the business world, but to all life aspects. Knowing ourselves and knowing the world around us can make a diffence between failure and success when trying to achieve our objectives. It might seem really easy, but it´s not, sometimes can be more difficult than the toughest engineering problem.
But lessons were not theoretical about philosophical concepts, not at all. We have applied everything we were taught to practical cases and examples, from a presentation about Madrid´s public transport to a negotiation in China between El Corte Inglés and it´s scarves supplier. The course was divided into 3 main modules:
-Effective presentations
-Effective negotiations
-Leadership
I personally ignored how really fundamental these 3 social abilities could be in the managerial world, but now that I´m aware of my strenghts and weaknesses, I know which ones do I have to improve and in which ones I´m good at.
I just bought Stephen Covey’s book “The 7 habits of highly effective people”, I´m waiting for it to get delivered, I can´t wait to start reading it.
“Every human has four endowments: self awareness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom, the power to choose, to respond, to change” – Stepehen R. Covey
