What should be the role of Spain?
The economic situation of a country will always be something relative, so we can not think about the future role of Spain in the Global Economy without thinking in the rest of the countries. India, China, Russia, Brazil… are developing countries which may rule the world, together with more stable countries such as US and Germany. But what about Spain? The time for Spain to be a World Economic Power has already gone so so many years ago, but It can play a good role in the next decades comparing to the second level countries.
What should Spain focus on? Our country hasn´t got neither so many natural resources nor big amount of workforce. In those terms, it is impossible that a country like Spain competes directly at the same level against the developing countries mentioned before. However, Spain is currently doing pretty well in some fields, such as tourism, consultancy, engineering companies, textile industry and renewable energies.
In my opinion, Spain should focus in quality, so everyone could connect Spanish products and services as high standard ones. For example, high qualified workers, tourism of first level, tasty quality food, technology and telecommunications innovative companies…This is something viable that would let Spain play an honest role in the global economy.
In those terms, the new state policy “Marca España” is a good first step to improve the image of this country both domestically and beyond its borders. “Marca España” goes further and focus not only in economy terms, but also in political, cultural, social, scientific and technological states. This would help the rest of the world consider Spain not maybe like a big economic power, but as a reliable one with good product and services.
