PIPA (Protect IP Act) & SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act)
First of all, I guess my colleagues will talk about what PIPA (Protect IP Act) & SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) are, so I just want to express my opinion and the different opinions it could spark off.
In my opinion, there is a huge contradiction between what these bills pretend to do and the main concept of Internet, sharing files and knowledge.
Personally, I can understand the strong defense of the copyrights, but these legislations make website owners responsible and punishable for how users interact with their sites. Are the owners really guilty of the manipulation on these websites? It is really complicated to control these websites because they are easily manipulated and abused, causing them to be severely limited or blocked.
Nowadays, there are many people giving their opinion about this subject, but all of them since their own point of views. I mean, there are two different groups, the property owners and the users. I also think that is really dangerous to give corporations and the government the right to seek affirmative legal action with the different websites.
But, where will the limits be? If these bills are accepted, at least, they should be controlled for an independent organism, if not the limits will be very problematic.
In conclusion, SOPA & PIPA will not stop the piracy they intend to prevent, they contain ambiguous language which makes them more apt for abuse and introduce an unprecedented level of censorship to the open internet. So, we only can wait and see what happens with these bills.
