After one week at EOI
Hello all!
My name is Natalia Díaz, I’m from Costa Rica and I will be coursing the International Masters in Sustainable Development and Corporate Responsibility. As most of you, I am very happy to be here , and after a week I am still excited to be here.
I had a great expectation about coursing a masters degree at EOI and leaving as foreign student at Madrid, but after this week of welcome ceremony, classes introductions and team building activity I think EOI will go beyond my expectations.
We are very lucky and blessed to be here, because despite we are having a masters degree that will improve our professional career, we will be also able to learn from our peers culture, experience, and learn other points of view and of course our great teachers and their daily expereinces.
This master will give us the tools to achieve our objective and promote a different way of thinking that will lead us to this development that will improve human beings life and preserve our environment that hopefully will give an opportunity for rural communities.
Revolutionary changes
It is amazing to have the opportunity to know people around the world. Mostly, if this people are, in some way, close to you. During these days, I have been thinking why I fell so comfortable, like when I am with my old friends, when I am with you guys. It could be a little bit bizarre, but at the end it is not strange at all.
After some philosophical dissertations with myself (not at all, its just to be more elegant!) I understood that this strange nearness regards on our desires and challenges. The reasons of what are we here are multiple, but the challenges we decide (implicitly) to afford are very close and interconnected. We all want to contribute to re-change our home (our planet and society) for a better, responsible and sustainable place.
It is said, that the strengthening of corporate and public ethics that promotes human sustainable development is an imperative challenge of our times. I believe that the world not only need qualified leaders, but also passionate and compromised humans being that desire to be part and afford this challenge. If I am right, for only being here we are making a revolutionary change, at least in our own lives.
My new life at EOI
After one week of starting a master’s program in a foreign country, I realized this experience is meaning for me the most ‘profitable’ pause in my life I am passing through. It doesn´t mean the IMSD is not going to be hard (actually today I realized it’s going to be very hard). But If I look back four weeks ago, I remember myself making appointments, calling at least seven people a day and asking them if I could interview them, travelling to Andean communities or visiting all kind of institutions in order to find good news that may be published in the diary I work for. Well, that was my stressing life until four weeks ago.
Nowadays, I see myself starting a new stage in my life. Like many of my classmates, I am trying to adapt to a new country, trying to make new friends and ‘fit’ in the group. This made me feel anxious in the first days of the program, but then I noticed that the 10 months master’s program at EOI is going to be (if I decide to) the opportunity to make a 180 degree turn in my career.
Yes, I think the IMSD will progressively give me the tools that could help me to further contribute to solve problems in my country like child malnutrition, poverty or the great economic inequalities between rich and poor people. I am also glad to find that my new classmates are also asking all kind of questions related to development issues and looking to lead CSR projects in their respective countries.
Finally, I will like to share two great pictures I took last year. The first one is a typical mother of the Andean of Peru that at that time was learning to improve the way she feeds her baby. The second one is of a girl of the Amazon that was taking care of her little brother.
first impressions and shared videos
hey guys, these first days have been fantastic, it’s been a great pleasure to meet people from many countries, with different backgrounds, so many experiences and knowledge to share. I’m sure this will contribute a lot to our progress.
I’d like to take this opportunity to share 2 videos with all of you. Maybe some of you have already watched one of them or even both, but those who haven’t, I strongly reccomend to. They are simple and illustrate a lot of things we will study and, actually, I lot of things I personally believe as well. rgds!!! Fabio

¡Hola EOI!
¡Hola a todos! =D
I’m Syafrina and I come from Malaysia. I am currently a student of the International Masters in Sustainable Development and Corporate Social Responsibility (IMSD) at Escuela de Organización Industrial (EOI).
Click here to view the embedded video.
Click on the above video to watch Leda Stott, Director of the IMSD at EOI talk about the Master’s programme.
I was raised in various countries and cities such as Leeds in United Kingdom, Pennsylvania and New York City in United States, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, and recently I spent a year of my life in Perugia, Italy. I guess I am what some would refer to as a “Third Culture Kid”. However, growing up with a mother who managed to escape poverty through education and worked hard to become who she is today, I was always taught to remember my roots and where I come from. Thus, Malaysia is close to my heart, and I often try to seek means and ways to contribute my skills and knowledge to the development of my nation, the Southeast-Asian region, and thereby the world.
My arrival in Madrid was my first taste of Spain. Since the day I landed in this bustling city situated in the heart of the Iberian Peninsula, I have encountered a hybrid of both sweet and sour events, which have all been life-learning experiences to me as an international student.
Regardless of some of the challenges I have faced, I am happy to note here that upon commencement of the IMSD programme, my life in Madrid has become more and more fascinating as I meet and get to know my fellow comrades, professors/trainers/mentors, and others at EOI who hail from all sorts of countries, backgrounds, and expertise. It is truly amazing for me to witness the diversity of all my colleagues’ cultures, languages, thoughts, skills, perspectives, and more.

EOI Signboard – This picture was captured on the first day I arrived at EOI.
Today was the second day of our academic programme here at EOI and already I feel as though I’ve learned what some could have taken months or even years to attain! For that, I’m sincerely grateful for being given the opportunity to study here in this particular programme. It makes all the obstacles I’ve faced to get myself here completely worth it and I would like to personally thank EOI for the warm welcome you’ve given us.
Studying at EOI, I hope to absorb as much knowledge and wisdom as I possibly can on critical issues surrounding Global Climate Change and Sustainable Development, as well as the important role of Corporate Social Responsibility on society, the environment, and the global economy. Of course at the same time, I would love to improve my knowledge of the Spanish language and maybe even adopt the madrileño accent.. haha..
Together with my fellow classmates, I look forward to learning, exploring, dreaming, and experiencing all that the IMSD programme at EOI has to offer and am truly glad to be a part of it. As one of my favourite authors, Paulo Coelho, states:
“Be brave. Take risks. Nothing can substitute experience”
‘Til my next post, hasta luego!
A whole new world
…that is what we really need. Ok, we can not just change our world today or buy a new one tomorrow. We have to put in more effort. However, as I see our IMSD class with its enthusiasm, commitment and excitement we are on a good track.
Being with my classmates, studying and having good time with them makes me feel similar to that when I am in a presentation of Dr. Jane Goodall (anthropologist and primatologist), one of the personalities who give me inspiration. She says: “What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” I like this sentence as it makes you stop for a moment, think of your actions, behavior, decisions and their impacts. The earlier the better. The Jane Goodall Institute – where I am also a volunteer – educates children and young people all over the world to be aware of the environmental and humanitarian problems our world faces and think about the possible solutions, even if it is a little or simple thing. Please, take some moments to watch this inspiring video:
We have to be open to new ideas, to widen our knowledge about the challenges and to put in all of our energy, experience and willing to change things. It seems, this is what we start or continue to do at EOI: keep learning and experiencing – from the teachers but also from each other.
Aren’t we all dreaming about a whole new world? We heard at the inauguration event that we all should have a dream. So let’s realize this dream, let’s make a difference with IMSD 2011/2012.
Ildikó from Hungary
PS: I received a self-made dream catcher from my Guatemalan work mate for my farewell last year, so I am sure that my bad dreams will be caught and my good dreams will pass through, so they can be accomplished. Thanks to EOI and IMSD to help me and others realizing dreams.
On my way to the future
After the first presentation of EOI held last Friday the most common expression I noticed looking at my future fellows was a smile. So did I. The excitement and illusion to start this new adventure and chapter in our life was almost palpable in the air.
Few days later I come to admit that my initial expectations were satisfactorily met! Of course few days are not enough to perceive how it will be at the end, but they are more than sufficient to feel the great atmosphere which surrounds us! I am so glad to share this new experience with such lovely group of people, this perfect mix of different background, culture, experiences, interests, languages, and so on!!!
Within such a variety, few very important common features are emerging: the strong motivation to co-operate and co-learning; the determination to embrace a new path in order to foster our creativity and knowledge; the hope to be able one day to change in some way the reality of our day-to-day life and influence the others; the dream to contribute to create a more sustainable, fair and healthy World.
EOI seems to serve as a very interesting platform helping us reach our common objectives, enabling us to access properly a challenging work environment: promoting the correction of societal design, addressing mechanisms which are leading our society and planet toward degradation (not to say worse) is maybe the biggest challenge humans have ever faced.
Yet, while the reality looks upsetting, we all have the weapons to face it: vision, enthusiasm, and trust!
IMSD Begins
On Oct 20th, I started my International Masters in Sustainable Development.
The opening ceremony was not only captivating and inspiring, but it also brought me reassurance that this is exactly what I was meant to be doing. EOI was exactly the school I was looking for, and I can say without a doubt that the people surrounding me will be my friends for life.
Many people would like a brighter future, a future where you don’t just dream of a greener world, but where you can also make it a reality! After my first two classes at EOI, where I got to meet and interact with my professors, I understood that, here I will gather all the techniques to make my dreams come true. Not only are my professors experts in their subject matter, but they are also very easy to approach, something that is rare to find in other academic institutions.
This is the wonderful class of IMSD 2011, and not too far into the future, we will all look back to this day and realize that all our amazing stories started here. Together we can all change the world, all we have to do is believe in ourselves! With such as amazing support system, this won’t be hard to do!
EOI- This song is dedicated to you! To all my classmates, thank you for making me feel like I found ‘home’ in Spain, we can make this world a real ‘paradise’! Shout out to Rodrigo for introducing me to this song. =)

The Beginning…
As my predecessors have already said and probably as my follower bloggers will: I am very happy to be here. I was really looking forward for the classes to start, because I really thought that picking EOI was a good choice. After those few days I can say that I am assured that it was The best choice. I was always looking for an establishment were the practical approach is present in almost every aspect of the teaching process. It makes everything (well almost everything) that we learn alive and aplicable to our future life or work.
It may sound a little bit cheesy, but I will still say it.
As a volunteer during my stay in Brazil, I was building wooden houses for the most needy families. After seeing the reactions of those families after receiving their new houses, I knew that my professional life need to be beneficial for other people or their environment, or at least give them a smile. In some way it is quite egoist, because it is what will make me happy:) This is why I’ve chosen this program, because in my opinion it is putting me on the right path to accomplish or give me a better possibility in doing so.
Another thing that keep me very motivated for the rest of the year is my multinational entourage. I feel very well in such an environment and I am certain that it will be very beneficial for all of us to learn from each other about our cultures, habits and countries. As our tutors already have said to us, I will try to take any opportunity that it is given to me and try to give it back.
Take care everybody!!
