Team work
How does it feel to be working in a group, pressed for time, wet from the rain, blindfolded and receiving instructions in a foreign language? Thanks to the team building exercise of last week, I now know the answer. Though it might come as a surprise to many, I must say it feels great!
Of course, to stand under the rain blindfolded can never be fun on its own, but do it in a group of some energetic people, and suddenly, the competition turns into an adventure! While the group had only one official leader, everyone played an important role. In fact, when communication in Spanish and English became hard to understand, my group mate and I spoke in Russian, which I then translated into English for anyone else still lost.
Another interesting thing, the haka! Who knew that a small cheer my friend taught me in middle school will come in handy during my Master’s program? Best of all, I had a team that was not afraid to tap into their cheer-leading side and sing with me in English.
In the end, although my team didn’t walk away with a prize, we walked away with something better- new friends, a bonding haka and good memories for life!
Small things form a greater
I was in Germany this weekend and had to fly via Frankfurt. It is the largest airport in Germany and an important aviation hub. Everything seems so big and the distances are really far. I had still time until boarding and set down to watch what is going on around me. It was interesting to see how everybody there has its special function – some are cleaning, some assist the passengers and others are driving vehicles. It seems like everybody knows what to do, how to do it and at what time. It seems it all works together and all these small works keep the airport running. There are many processes standardized. I compared it to our society. Everybody is a fraction and all together we are forming it. Like the people at the airport. How would it be if we implement sustainable strategies into our society? So that everybody changes his habits a little bit and we are able to generate a big change.
I got from point A to point B because of a presentation about plastic bags. I want to avoid to use them and create awareness. Lets stop using plastic bags! They are just to dangerous for the environment! No need to use them – there are many possibilities to replace them in our daily life: http://www.reuseit.com/
Many ordinary people in many small places doing many small steps can change the face of the world!
My First Week at EOI
I am so glad to be given a chance to express myself on how i am settling at EOI. For the first time in my life i have gone out of Africa and the place to be happens to be EOI in Madrid. I was questioning myself, is it worthy it, but just being here for a week i have noticed that my stay here will add alot of value to me and Africa as a whole. In our continent we have a saying “You teach one lady, you teach a nation.” I happen to be that lady and the school being EOI.
I have seen that there is a lot of interraction between the students and the lectures, this will help me to know more about other countries, for example in the classes most of the discussions are about our countries. I beleive that the practical examples about our countries will give me a better picture of some countries like Costa lica, Venezula, Malasia just to mention a few.
In addition, i feel that my skills and knowledge in technology will greatly improve since we are not very good at this in Africa. I knew very litte about the blogs, and i have already tried one within a two weeks, thats powerfull knowledge, I am glad i chose this school. .
On thursday, i was overwhelmed with the interraction we had during the ”In door classes” thanks for the guys in my group, you did a lot of translation, but mind you in a months time, you will not have that job again because i am learning atleast five words a day. I know staying here at EOI for a year, i wil gain a lot, one of it being the langauge and thats spanish, a plus to an African woman.
However, i need to ask for one favour from the lecture, pleases try to speak slowly when speaking spanish in the lectures. A mix is very good but i need to learn slowly until am there.
A Turning Point!
Dear Blog Reader
After finishing my graduate studies in management ;I decided to look for master course that would give me further skills to work on the field that I fell passionate about which is social economic development.
However soon after the first sections on the IMSD PROGRAM I have realized that I would gain much more.
To begin, I loved the fact that you can study with international students who are likeminded, eager to debate and learn from each other. The infrastructure of the school is another great bonus, making you feeling inspired to reflect a being creative.
Lastly the academic staff is renowned on their field expertise and the school administrative staff are very approachable, both are willing to share their views and working experience on one to one basis, allowing immediate connection.
After the welcoming sections and outdoor training experience I felt that EOI cares about inspiring its students; to show them how to deal with challenges and to work as a team to attain results. This care has surprised me because in most master courses you are considered as just another student.
Many of the IMSD PROGRAM classmates including me have joined this course with the expectation to change their career direction or to be in the direction of those who will contribute to make our society more sustainable and to propose alternatives for businesses and world problems.
In this respect I believe that the IMSD PROGRAM content, together with EOI´s environment and friendly relationship with other passionate fellow students will make the perfect chance of achieving a Positive Turning Point in our lives and equip us to act.
What else can I say, I feel grateful and thrilled to be studying here and excited about the wonderful things that will result from this new journey…
Best Wishes
PATRICIA
Welcome to EOI
Hello all!
My first post is related to the most tough but definitely most funny day at EOI: the well-known “Outdoor Training”.
I must admit that i was quite curious and expectant since the start of the week about that famous training which was taking place on thursday during the afternoon. What kind of training was waiting for us?! i can say it defies the imagination..
I never experienced one before but i found it such a pertinent way to welcome the students and encourage us to get to know other master students while building team spirit.
As we all know, it consisted on different exhausting activities which were somewhere hidden in different places at school and we had to succesfully get through to aspire to the winning position. I can state that i learned from the very fist moment in which i had to meet with my “unknown” training mates that having a funny and energic disposition from the beginning can guarantee the group a positive way of facing the activities and cooperation among the members.
Some situations were really challenging but my qualified mates and my sometimes “bird-brain” leader :p were always encouraging the others to have a good laugh. We were finally not the winners but the important thing is that we really enjoyed as well as built a nice atmosphere among the team members, we learnt how to respect each other opinions, how important communication and trust are to get through the activities after maybe 40 minutes feeling frustration, desperation, tiredness, abandon… but always laugh.
This outdoor training motivated me even more with the start of IMSD, i feel really excited imagining what this master will bring us during the year..
Change is needed
Many people are aware of it: If we continue to treat our planet like we do now, we will rob us our basis of life. I have a dream about a sustainable world where humans are not exploiting nature and the basic needs of everybody are met. It was raining in Madrid some days ago – an unusual weather here. Nonetheless I like it. I like it to feel some raindrops on my skin, if the wind blows and plays with my hair. Nature can show its power in different ways. For example with earthquakes or thunderstorms. I understand it as follows: “Do not work against me! Do not exploit me! Do not trample all over me!”
I am happy to be here at EOI and to take one step towards my dream of a sustainable world. I am even more happy to take this step together with people who are passionate about our planet too. For sure we will have a fantastic time together. Thanks for the great start!
Indoor/ Outdoor meeting activity
On thursday 27, an activity oriented to introduce ourselves in between us, and foster team work, took place at the EOI’s headquater.
This event had a positive effect, in the sense that our “musical bands” were formed by students from different Masters, making possible to see what’s the school about in an holistic way. This is important if we consider that during the activity, everyone had different points of view which always helped in some point of the challenges we had. That’s what a band in about, it’s a matter of summing the knowledge
of our instruments and creating from it a great sound, and even though we did not had the same level as U2, there was definitely a great sense of teamwork in between our interactions during the event.
Spanish around the IMSD
Muy buenos días a todos,
My name is Antonio Calixto I am form Spain. I was born in Granada ( city that I recommend to visit immediately) but I have been living in Madrid for almost my life. After a week at the EOI I have to say that it was more than amazing. I have never thought that I would find this kind of experiences in my own country. At first sight the IMSD represents absolutely all the values that I want to be present in my future professional career and also in my life. The IMSD way of learning I guess that is the most efficient because at the end who is going to have exams and no practices at their finally jobs. The professors are professionals of their respective fields, professionals that can show us real problems and how to solve it in a practical way.
From my point of view this looks like an experience that most of us are not going to forget in all our lives. The amount of international students will give me the opportunity to absorb not just the knowledge of the proper course but also the knowledge of themselves. Related to the the activity that we did the thursday “Indoor Training” was comforting to know that the spirit which is present in our master is represented in different ways in all the students of the EOI.
I can not wait to live what this master has prepared for us.
Impression about out(in)door training…and some more.
Hello everybody,
I’m going to write my second post in this kind of virtual diary, and this will be about our “afternoon training” of yesterday and furthermore about the first week at EOI school (sorry to keep some freedom about the topic, but I really wish to talk about this experience!).
Well, concerning this new experience of group training, it was really funny and at the same time, really interesting; it helps very much to understand the importance of the group in some given situations, and even some other focal points that we’ll need to manage in our future world:
the working enviroment.
I have a (quiet) long working experience, but I still missing the working team, and this is one of the skill that I really wish to improve. Sharing and giving my ideas, and receive feedback from the others…this is the work that I’ve always dreamed…and if it will be helpfull for our (I mean for our earth) sustainibility, it will be a dream!
Ok now let’s coming back to nowadays, I wish to resume briefly my last week: we’ve started IMSD master just since 1 week, and I have to say that’s really intensive and full time experience, but as some days ago I’ve said to some of my italian’s friends, I’ve never felt bored or tired from this hard work, because I like the whole subjects that I’ve been attended…it’s like when you read a book…if you don’t like it, it seems to be endless, otherwise if you enjoy it, you can read until late night without feel yourself tired. I think that Eva was speaking about this feeling when the first time I’ve met her she said to me that this “year” will run so fastly and we’ll be in july without being conscious of this time!
These are no correct words that could describe my feelings on 1st week of IMSD, but I apologize myself (especially if Prof.Leda will read this), I try to describe it with two simple word and one even simpler feeling: roller coaster.
I wish to write even more, but I understand that it could be a boring, especially for whom needs to read every blogs, so just a last thing: I’d like to reserve a special mention to a particular moment of this week, that it’s just happened today, during the last of our subjects: the class of Renewable Energies of our Proff. (Marcos) who has showed us a video [see it below] and I was moved…this is the essence to what we’re going to try to do in our future life, or at least, this is what I (wish) think for my future.
My first week at EOI
Hi everyone!!! These first days at EOI have been great. It has been wonderful to start sharing with such a colorful group (as one of our classmates described us). I have discovered leaders from different countries, ages and backgrounds, but most of all, a group that is looking forward to improve the quality of life of others.
I feel fortunate for having chosen EOI, which has demonstrated to be a serious and sustainable entity with personalized education. I have been surprised by the excellent use that EOI gives to social media and to digital tools. It is quite impressive how all the information that we get is linked to a QR code and to different online sources. Learning how to use digital tools is essential for our development because it helps us improve our marketing skills.
At last, I would like to share with you this link where you will be able to download Greenpeace´s Red and Green guide for GE and non-GE food. I hope you use it!
