Introduction to Clean Development Mechanism

This image explains what is, to me, one of the greatest innovative idea that came up in the Kyoto Protocol: the Clean Development Mechanism.
This image illustrates perfectly what it is: a developed country invests in a low carbon project in a developping country and gains credits in order to achieve its Kyoto targets.
The amount of emissions reductions is calculated by comparing the CO2 emissions on a scenario called “business as usual”, which means the amount of CO2 emissions without a project and the greenhouse gas emissions with the project.
This mechanism allows the investing country to gain emissions credit, but also allows technology and know-how transfer, setting up of environment friendly source of energy, and involvement of the local population.
But, there is also another purpose of this mechanism: contributing to the sustainable development for the recipient of the project, the local community. This aspect of the project is much more difficult to evaluate and to calculate. Many tools have been set up to achieve this, all them with pros and cons.
This mechanism has a double purpose: contributing to global emissions reduction and to sustainable development.
It could be one of the key answers to global climate change and to poverty allienation.
As I am very interested by the subject, I will keep posting more information on this topic.
Tgis xas just a short introduction to it. We will get more into details later.
