Why implement an environmental management system at my company?

In this post I would like to explain something about the importance of implementing an Enviromental Management System in the company, and specifically, about the EMAS Regulation, on which I’m doing my master project. It is related to another one of my posts written in Spanish, called: ¿Por qué implantar un SGA en mi empresa? published a few days ago.

Nowadays, Environmental Management Systems are becoming increasingly important in all types of companies. An EMS is a continual cycle of planning, implementing, reviewing and improving the environmental performance of an organisation, helping initiate environmental management in all areas.

Due to the demands of the consumers, who are increasingly environmentally conscious, modern companies will have to respond appropriately communicating their environmental policy by the implementation of management systems that facilitate monitoring of its processes from the environmental point of view.

Now, the ISO 9001 quality control is not enough, and other voluntary standards are needed such as ISO 14001 and the European EMAS Regulation, “Eco-Management and Audit Scheme”, which goes a step further by requiring a greater effort in meeting environmental requirements. Specifically, the objective of EMAS shall be to promote continual improvements in the environmental performance of organisations.

Companies that have implemented this system, are recognized by a logo that guarantees the accuracy of environmental information to allow consumers to recognize their commitment to continuous improvement. They are audited annually by an accredited independent entity that verifies the proper monitoring system and compliance with environmental commitments.

Another important factor to consider is the involvement of employees in the organization, so that there is a widespread environmental awareness to ensure sustainability of the measures implemented over time as well as the aforementioned continuous improvement.

The benefits of implementing these systems, besides the already mentioned, are cost savings, competitive advantages, reducing environmental risks, and ensuring compliance.

Now, I want to show a EMAS Toolkit for small organisations published on the EU web site. It explains step by step all the points of the EMAS Regulation and makes it easy to understand and implement for this kind of business.

The main steps to implement the EMAS Regulation in our company are:

Participation in the scheme is voluntary and extends to public or private organizations operating in the European Union and the European Economic Area (EEA) – Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. An increasing number of candidate countries are also implementing the scheme in preparation for their accession to the EU.

I hope that this post was able to make known to the less initiated readers in environmental issues, the various mechanisms to ensure optimal environmental management in the company. These actions allow it to achieve economic, social and environmental benefits, following a sustainable development.
