Entering into a new Space
What is mobile learning ? … or better What do I need to learn while being mobile? Well, first of all I need Information – the stuff I would like to learn and secondly a medium which presents the information to me in a way that I understand it
? Right ?
Technology enables us to have access to a vast variety of information but what about mobility? Watching a video with your laptop in the Metro? Reading a book on your mobile phone? Well yeah, it is possible but it is awkward or kills your eyes and as such does not really help.
This is where tablets enable us to enter into a new space. Giving us access to all the information wherever we are without limiting us to the book or newspaper which we choose to take with us in the morning. Having the choice is really what makes the difference.
As with all the gadgets and tools, it’s all about “How do you use them !!!” Personally I think having access to the Internet for Web browsing is nice, but what really makes a differences is to have access to your personal or personalized data wherever you are.
- Evernote is my personal favorite. I use it to take all my class notes including drawings, screenshots and whatever information I need to capture. Using your laptop to take notes also works but it always creates this screen barrier between you and everyone else which looks like you are hiding something. The tablet really makes a difference.
The other advantage of Evernote is that it automatically synchronizes all the notes and I can access them at home on my PCs and even on my mobile phone. It’s free for up to 60MB which is plenty in terms of notes. - Skitch enhances Evernote to take and edit pictures or to make a quick sketch. There is also a PC version to create and edit screenshots.
- Mantano Reader is a PDF reader which is especially useful to highlight text and create text and graphical annotations.
- Remember the Milk is a task management tool based on the “Getting Things Done” methodology by David Allen. It keeps all your tasks synchronized so that you can access them on your PC at home (MilkSync for Outlook), on your mobile phone or via a web portal. The web version is free of charge but you need the Pro version for about 20,-€ per year to use it on your tablet after the free trial.
- Funambol keeps your personal data synchronized. With this you can access your Pictures, Videos and Files on your tablet, home PC and via a web portal. Up to 150MB are free of charge and you can get 5GB for about 25€ per year.
- BeyondPod is a Podcast Manager and RSS feed reader. It automatically downloads the latest video and audio Podcast you are interested in without the need to check all the different web pages if there is already a new episode. Especially the BBC provides good Podcasts worth listening to keep up-to-date.
- OruxMaps is similar to GoogleMaps but in addition gives you access to OpenStreetMaps which are often more detailed then the Maps from Google with the option to save them locally. You can also record your own tracks and upload them to sites like www.gpsies.com and www.evertrail.com
- Flashlight you always need one
