“Open Innovation”

This is not the first of time of my life that I hear the word innovation in terms of business. The last year in my last year of degree I had a subject called Innovation & Entrepreneurship a mixed between our two common subjects. The first thing that I learned very briefly was that there are more innovation in our common life that people believe and the second one is that it is not too late for anyone to apply innovation into it. As I am going to explain in the following post innovation could be measured and applicable without having a mega creative brain. It could be applicable as a process that everybody and every business could use.

The term “open innovation” appears lead by Henry Chesbrough in his book Open Innovation. The Prof. dr. Henry Chesbrough who is working at the University of Berkeley has a unique background as both a practitioner and a researcher this fact has made that Henry Chesbrough would be one of the most innovative and respected authorities on how to get ideas to market. According to oppeinnovation.net Chesborugh defines his creation with the following statement “Open innovation is the use of purposive inflows and outflows of knowledge to accelerate internal innovation, and expand the markets for external use of innovation, respectively. [This paradigm] assumes that firms can and should use external ideas as well as internal ideas, and internal and external paths to market, as they look to advance their technology.”

What I have understood about this term is represented perfectly in the previous picture. There should be a common platform similar to the one that we use to create innovative ideas to the EOI where companies could share information about problem solving and innovative processes that could be useful fot other companies that do not have to be necessarily in the same market. Normally companies have internal processes to innovate where they have never share information with other companies about how they have been solving problems or innovating. For example I am a textile company and I have been struggling with a problem that have been solved months ago by a motor company I could use some innovative ideas in order to solve my problems save money and time and viceversa.

There are websites such as openinovation.eu that enables companies to be able to respond in a quick and flexible way to changes in the environment and to remain competitive despite the shortening time-to-market and life cycles of products and technologies. They have created a platform where companies could develop activities from developing management tools and in-company training to exploring new application fields for open innovation among many other. One of the examples that I liked the most related with this kind of innovation is an american company that sells t-shirts and they have created a website where the people can upload their own designs. The second step is the organization from the company of a contest between all the designs and the winner earns and specific amount of money, the production of his or her design and a percentage od the sales. This is just an idea of how innovation could help to a business to be profitable in a creative way.
